Chenab Bridge – Cable Crane

Construction of the highest railway bridge in the world.

The bridge with a span of 460 m and a height of 330 m is part of the railway route Jammu–Srinagar in the Himalaya region in India. For the construction and subsequent maintenance of the arch bridge two cable crane trolley systems were installed.

The span of the main cables is 915 metres, the pylons at the ends have heights of 120 metres and 100 metres respectively. The support system consists of two guyed pylons on each side of the river, between which the cable crane travels back and forth using travelling and suspension cables. The cable crane is designed to transport loads along the cable route. The traverses are 40 m long with a load-bearing capacity of 20 tonnes each on the hook. Two such systems were installed next to each other, which can also be operated together in tandem.

VCE was responsible for the detailed planning of the two cable crane systems and the construction supervision of the pylon erection. This is the largest cable crane system ever built in the world.
