PROJECT of the MONTH MAY 2025 | VCE Provides Structural Health Monitoring Systems for 14 2GW-HVDC-Platforms in the North Sea
The European energy transition requires efficient infrastructures for the integration of renewable energies. The transmission network operator TenneT Germany and TenneT Netherlands is responsible for the installation and the operation of the power supplies for offshore wind parks in the Netherlands and Germany. For that purpose, TenneT establishes a new generation of 2GW-offshore-converter platforms in the North Sea. All in all, 14 of these highly modern platforms are planned for application in the German and Dutch Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Every platform is designed for a service life of 40 years and plays a central role in the implementation of the European climate targets.
VCE Vienna Consulting Engineers Provides Structural Health Monitoring Systems
TenneT assigned VCE Vienna Consulting Engineers as provider of structural health monitoring systems for all of the 14 platforms to ensure long-term serviceability and structural safety of the offshore platforms. The innovative SHM systems of VCE continuously record and analyse relevant structural parameters and enable a forward-looking maintenance and repair. Thus, operating costs are optimized and the safety as well as longevity of the platforms is considerably increased.
This large-scale project of VCE is an essential contribution to the safe and efficient integration of offshore wind energy into the European power network and actively contributes to the realization of a sustainable future for energy in Europe. The combination of modern sensor technology, data-driven analysis and long-time experience in structural monitoring ensures that the 2GW-converter platforms sustainably satisfy the high demands in the offshore area.
