PROJECT OF THE MONTH JANUARY 2026 | The Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna (KHM) is one of Europe’s most important museum buildings. In preparation for the planned construction measures, VCE is supporting the project with comprehensive vibration engineering consulting and measurement services to ensure the best possible protection of both the historic structure and the art treasures housed within it.
As part of the planned construction works, vibration-intensive activities are to be expected, which may have potential impacts on the building structure as well as on particularly sensitive exhibits — including paintings, sculptures and other works of art. The aim of the investigations carried out by VCE is to identify potential impacts at an early stage and to establish a sound basis for decision-making for effective protective measures during the construction phase.
Multi-stage measurement campaign for maximum safety
In early September 2025, VCE conducted a multi-day measurement campaign in and on the building of the Kunsthistorisches Museum. The focus was on trial construction works as well as so-called ambient vibration measurements in order to analyse the dynamic behaviour of the structure in detail. The measurement programme included the simultaneous recording of vibrations at multiple locations within the building. Relevant vibration events were captured to determine emissions, immissions and transfer functions within the structure.
Sound basis for decisions during the construction phase
The evaluated measurement results are compared against the protection objectives of relevant standards and guidelines. On this basis, VCE derives concrete recommendations for limiting vibration immissions during the construction phase.
Project manager Hanno Töll emphasises the particular sensitivity of the project: “With this project, we are making a significant contribution to the responsible handling of historic building fabric and cultural heritage. Our investigations provide the technical basis for implementing necessary construction works with the greatest possible consideration for art, architecture and the valuable exhibits.”
