Sound level measurements Koralmbahn

PROJECT of the MONTH JULY 2025 | Precision on Track: Final Noise Measurements Completed for Koralmbahn High-Speed Rail

The final preparations for the commissioning of the Koralmbahn are well underway. Over 280 test runs have already been completed along the high-speed rail line between Graz and Klagenfurt, with trains reaching speeds of up to 250 km/h. These extensive tests—conducted using locomotives, measurement vehicles, and Railjets—have confirmed a record travel time of just 45 minutes between the two cities.

As part of these preparations, our experts from the department Acoustics, Building Dynamics, Building Physics & Measurement Technology team carried out crucial on-site noise measurements on behalf of ÖBB. A Railjet was specially equipped with sound level meters to assess noise emissions during operation at full speed. Microphones were installed both outside the train and inside the passenger compartment to capture accurate data. These measurement runs were conducted in collaboration with VCE.

In addition, reverberation time measurements were performed in the tunnel sections in June, further contributing to the overall acoustic analysis.
