Cable Force Measurements U6 Bridge Spittelau

PROJECT OF THE MONTH 03/2026 | The U6 cable-stayed bridge at Spittelau is a key element of Vienna’s public transport infrastructure. Since its completion in 1993, the bridge has carried the U6 metro line safely across the Danube Canal. To ensure its long-term structural integrity and operational safety, VCE has been carrying out regular cable force measurements since 2002 – most recently in November 2025.

As part of the recurring three-year inspection cycle, VCE performed repeat measurements of the cable forces on all 32 stay cables using the proprietary BRIMOS® monitoring system. The project was commissioned by Wiener Linien GmbH & Co KG.

Periodic Monitoring for Sustainable Structural Integrity

Cable force measurements are a central component of structural health monitoring for cable-stayed bridges. Changes in cable forces may indicate alterations in the structural system, load redistribution or material behaviour. By maintaining a consistent three-year measurement interval, even minor deviations can be detected at an early stage and assessed in a timely manner.

The BRIMOS® system enables precise, non-destructive determination of cable forces based on vibration measurements. This method ensures reliable results while minimizing interference with ongoing metro operations.

Interdisciplinary Expertise for Maximum Safety

The project was led by Martin Fritz and delivered through the close collaboration of the Competence Centers Structural Monitoring and Life Cycle Engineering & Asset Management.

This interdisciplinary approach combines in-depth measurement expertise with advanced structural analysis and life-cycle assessment. The collected data is not only evaluated in terms of current structural performance but also integrated into long-term asset management strategies.

By linking monitoring with engineering analysis, VCE provides a robust basis for forecasting structural behaviour and planning maintenance measures proactively.

Long-Term Partnership for Infrastructure Reliability

More than two decades of regular measurements provide a valuable data basis for trend analyses and forecasts,” explains Martin Fritz, highlighting the advantages of long-term assignments combined with an interdisciplinary approach.
