Water Gate Building Nussdorf

VCE Project of the Month 10/2026. Settlement monitoring by means of BRIMOS® during construction works at the historic water gate building at Brigittenauer Sporn in Wien Nussdorf.

VCE monitors the settlements of the existing historic water gate building at Brigittenauer Sporn in Wien-Nussdorf during ongoing construction works. The installed monitoring system continuously registers potential movements of the building and enables an immediate reaction in case defined threshold values are exceeded.

Monitoring of a historic building

The water gate building was built in 1898/1899 according to the drawings of the architect Otto Wagner as part of the Nussdorf weir and lock system. Today it accommodates the headquarters of the municipal department MA 45 – Viennese waterbodies.

Due to further cracks in the building, foundation retrofitting works are planned. VCE was assigned with the design and implementation of settlement monitoring to be able to detect potential impacts of the works on the historic building in time.

Continuous settlement monitoring

The system continuously registers the elevation of the defined 15 measurement points and transfers them to the BRIMOS®-Web-User-Interface.

The recorded measurement values are compared with the settlement threshold values defined for the building. If these threshold values are exceeded, the system automatically triggers an alarm. Thus, changes at the building during the construction works can be promptly recognized and respective measures can be introduced.

Settlement monitoring therefore serves the continuous monitoring of a sensitive historic building and supports the safe execution of construction and rehabilitation measures.
