FOURIER – AI for the Infrastructure of the Future

PROJECT OF THE MONTH 05/2026 | VCE actively contributes to shaping the digital future of resilient infrastructures with the European research project FOURIER.

As project partner the company brings in its expertise in the field of life cycle management in one of the most ambitious European research networks for intelligent infrastructure inspection and data-driven asset management.

Artificial Intelligence Revolutionizes Infrastructure Management

Artificial intelligence basically changes inspection and condition assessment of infrastructures. The target of the research project FOURIER is to develop new AI-based methods for automated inspections, structural health monitoring (SHM) and resilient decision processes. The focus is on an intelligent combination of data, digital twins and innovative visualization technologies.

FOURIER is the first European doctoral network for digital inspection and smart infrastructure management and is sponsored by the European Commission within the scope of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. Under the consortium leadership of the Politecnico di Torino universities, research facilities and industry partners work at the infrastructure of the future in an interdisciplinary way.

Research for Resilient and Sustainable Infrastructure

The development and the application of innovative technologies for the whole life cycle of infrastructure are in the centre of the project. This includes among others:

  • AI-algorithms for data fusion and interpretation of complex infrastructure information
  • Augmented-reality-applications and digital twins for modern inspection processes
  • AI-based decision models for sustainable and resilient infrastructure management
  • New approaches for the connection of technical, social and ecological aspects in infrastructure planning

VCE brings in its competence in the Competence Center Life Cycle Management and Structural Health Monitoring particularly in the fields of research, digitization and data-based infrastructure assessment.

Knowledge Transfer and International Cooperation

Apart from technological developments FOURIER also pursues a strong training and knowledge transfer approach to establish a Europe-wide network for research, industry, infrastructure operators and policy makers which actively promotes the knowledge transfer to resilient and sustainable infrastructure. In spring 2026 a first workshop of the FOURIER-training school already took place.
